In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 CSB)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him, not one thing was created that has been created. (John 1:1-3 CSB)

Everything has a beginning - except for God. He always was, always is, and always will be. But his creation had a beginning - a time when God said, “Let there be…” And there was! Out of nothing, he created the entire, vast universe. Wouldn’t you like to have been there to see the majesty, power, and greatness of God as he created the universe? I know that it is not possible for any human to have been there when it all began, but wouldn’t it have been mind-blowing to have seen God do it? Here is a poem for reflection, followed by a devotional thought.

In the Beginning

In the beginning…
I wish I were there,
When light was born;
When God in majesty and mystery,
Spoke forth all we see;
Color waves blending into
A prism of white,
White into rainbow explosion.

In the beginning…
I wish I were there,
When the Triune Creator said,
“Let there be…”
And there was!
Everything from nothing!
Always as planned;
Always as dreamed.

In the beginning…
I wish I were there,
For the first breath;
A living  soul,
Created in his image,
Born to live,
Born to love,
As he loves,

In the beginning…
I wish I were there,
To behold,
To marvel,
The infant.
The light of the world;
Who became one of us,
That we might live in the light.

In the beginning…
Was the end;
New heaven,
New earth,
New beginning!

Even “Christ Formed” has a beginning - with this inaugural post. Yes, everything has a beginning—except God! Think about your beginning as a follower of Jesus. There was a time when you said “yes,” when you stepped into a new identity, when you became a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Now, think about your life right now, and let me ask you three important reflection questions.

  1. How are you more like Jesus today than you were when you first started following Him?

  2. What is Holy Spirit saying to you right now about where you need to become more like Jesus?

  3. What specific action(s) will you take today that will address the answer to question #2 above?

Responsive Prayer:

Lord, I desire to become more like Jesus each day. Please, show me how to think, speak, and act like He did. Give me the power through Holy Spirit to live out what I am learning from Jesus each day.
